Sticks and Stones (James 3:1-12)
Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me! Those are words that we have heard all of our lives. They are words that we have often said but the older I have gotten the more I have found that Words HURT WAY MORE THAN STICKS DO!
If I looked at someone who truly respects me and that I truly love and respect and say the words “I hate you and never want to see you again!” How do you think that would make that person feel?
If someone looked at you and said, I wish you were dead…you’re nothing but trouble anyway! What would that say to that person.
You see when you are wounded by a stick you can see just how bad the wound is. However, when you are wounded with words you can’t tell how much damage has been done.
As we continue our study of James and looking at True Faith, I want us to remember that James has addressed the issue of speech in James 1:19, 1:26, and now he is addressing it here.
Why is it that James deals with this so much? Well, I can imagine that it is because there was an issue with speech in those days and with those he was instructing but I also believe that he understood the principle that our speech and out tongues display what is in the heart.
Jesus said in Matthew 15:18
But what comes out of the mouth comes from the heart, and this defiles a man.
The writer of Proverbs 4:23 tells us…
Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.
We must fill our hearts with Jesus and if we fill our hearts with Jesus then our lives will reflect it…our speech will reflect it…
James shares several things here in this passage about trying to tame the tongue. Basically I’m going to sum it up….IT CAN’T BE DONE BY MAN!
